Investigating the Impact of Cultural Factors on English Chinese Translations: A Case Study of David Hawkes Literary Works

Abstract

Purpose - This study explores the influence of cultural factors on David Hawkes, an esteemed sinologist, when translating Chinese literary works such as Ch'u Tz'u; Songs of the South," A Little Primer of Tu Fu," and A Dream of Red Mansions into English-Chinese translation. Our goal is to comprehensively understand how his translations facilitate cultural exchange between Chinese and Western literary traditions through his translations.

Design/Methodology/Approach - Utilizing an integrative approach, this research explores David Hawkes' experiences translating Chinese literary masterpieces using cultural studies as its base. By investigating Hawkes' methods and implications in translation practice and their impact, this investigation seeks to shed light on translation complexities while emphasising cultural nuances as the centre point. Finally, recommendations will be offered to enhance quality translations while acknowledging and reconciling cultural differences are included in its recommendations for improvement.

Findings - Hawkes' translations have played an instrumental role in fostering cross-cultural communications by offering English audiences nuanced perspectives of Chinese literature. Her translations demonstrate cultural complexities in translation and opportunities for enriching literary exchange across borders through careful consideration of language barriers and disparate cultures. This research confirms this.

Practical Implications - The practical implications of this research lie in its advancement of translation studies and cross-cultural communication disciplines. By understanding Hawkes' challenges and providing advice for improving his translation methodologies, this research helps refine translation methodologies while emphasising cultural factors in translation practices for more accurate yet culturally sensitive renditions of text.

Originality/Value - This study is distinctive due to its in-depth examination of David Hawkes' translations. It goes beyond conventional recognition of their worthiness by exploring cultural nuances and challenges inherent to translation processes. As such, this research offers essential insights for scholars, translators, educators and translators as they further their cross-cultural literary exchange efforts.
