Abstract

With the growing insurrections in Syria in 2011, an exodus in large numbers have emerged. The turmoil and violence have caused mass migration to destinations both within the region and beyond. The current "refugee crisis" has escalated sharply and its impact is widening from neighbouring countries toward Europe. Today, the Syrian crisis is the major cause for an increase in displacement and the resultant dire humanitarian situation in the region. Since the conflict shows no signs of abating in the near future, there is a constant increase in the number of Syrians fleeing their homes. However, questions on the future impact of the Syrian crisis on the scope and scale of this human mobility are still to be answered. As the impact of the Syrian crisis on host countries increases, so does the demand for the analyses of the needs for development and protection in these countries. In this special issue, we aim to bring together a number of studies examining and discussing human mobility in relation to the Syrian crisis.

Author Biographies

Pinar Yazgan, Department of Sosyology, Sakarya University

Pinar Yazgan is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Sakarya University, Turkey. Her PhD research focused on the sense of identity and belonging amongst migrants from Turkey in Denmark, and she is also a research grant recipient from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
She conducted field work in Denmark between 2007 and 2009 while also serving as a visiting researcher at the Danish National Research Centre for Social Sciences. Her recent research focuses on the integration of different generations of migrants from Turkey in Drammen, Norway. Her research interests include transnationalism, mobility and critical discourse analysis with a special focus on migrants. She is one of the editors of Journal of Migration and regular contributor of Turkish Migration Conferences. Most recently she has co-edited a special issue for Migration letters journal on Syria crisis and migration.

Deniz Eroglu Utku, Dept. of Political Science and Public Administration, Trakya University

Dr. Deniz Eroğlu Utku is an Assitant Professor in the Department for Public Administration in the Faculty for Economics and Administrative Sciences at the Trakya University in Edirne/Turkey.  She is Deputy Director of Institute for Roman Language and Culture, Trakya University. She is one of the editors of Journal of Gypsy Studies and regular contributor of Turkish Migration Conferences. She holds a PhD from the University of Essex, UK. Most recently she has co-edited a special issue for Migration Letters journal on Syrian crisis and migration.

Ibrahim Sirkeci, Ria Financial Professor and Director of Regent's Centre for Transnational Studies, Faculty of Business and Management, Regent's University London

Prof Ibrahim Sirkeci is Ria Financial Professor of Transnational Studies and Marketing and the Director of the Regent’s Centre for Transnational Studies (RCTS) at Regent’s University London (UK). He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Sheffield (UK) and a BA in Political Science and Public Administration from Bilkent University (Turkey). Prior to joining Regent's University London, Sirkeci had worked at the University of Bristol. His main areas of expertise are Human Mobility, Transnational Marketing and Consumers, Marketing of Business Schools, Labour Markets, Remittances, and Segmentation. He is the editor of several journals including Migration Letters and Transnational Marketing Journal. His books include Transnational Marketing and Transnational Consumers (Springer, 2013), Migration and Remittances during the Global Financial Crisis and Beyond(World Bank, 2012 with J. Cohen and D. Ratha), and Cultures of Migration, the global nature of contemporary mobility (University of Texas Press, 2011 with J. Cohen) which was named 'Outstanding Academic Title' by Choice magazine in the USA. He has been chairing the Turkish Migration Conference series since 2012.
