Abstract

This study examines the naat poetry of Shakir Kundan, highlighting his unique contribution to Urdu devotional literature. Tracing the evolution of naat from its origins in the Arabian Peninsula to its classical and contemporary forms, the paper situates Kundan’s work within both traditional and literary contexts. Through an analysis of his primary collections, Khillat- e-Tauqeer and Naghma-e-Muhammadi Se Nikli Aab-e-Jo, the study explores his profound love for the Prophet Muhammad , meticulous craftsmanship in language, rhyme, and rhythm, and his integration of Arabic and Persian literary influences. Kundan’s poetry reflects a rare synthesis of spiritual devotion, 1intellectual depth, and artistic sophistication, further enriched by his lived experience as a soldier, which adds intensity and authenticity to his verses. The study concludes that Shakir Kundan’s naat exemplifies the highest standards of devotional expression, combining heartfelt reverence with literary elegance, making him a distinctive figure in modern Urdu naat poetry.
