Sustained Exposure To Hindi Animated Cartoons And Its Cultivation Effects On Linguistic Adoption And Behavioural Change Among Pakistani Children
Abstract
Since the 1960s, children of nearly every age like watching Hindi animated cartoon as a primary source of entertainment. The sole objective of this study is to highlight the linguistic and aggressive behaviour of Pakistani children who exposed by Hindi animated cartoons. The precise goals of this study are to determine how the Hindi animated cartoon affect the mother language of Pakistani children. It also shows how the parents of these children [1]perceive the linguistic and aggressive influences on their children's speech and behaviour. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect data from (n=80) under-teenage children studying in seven elite class schools in Islamabad, ages 2 to 12, as well as from (n=40) parents of the same children, selected at random, using closed-ended questionnaires. For underage students, the nonverbal survey using pictures of Hindi cartoon characters was empirically used. For parents, closed-ended survey that included some conversation was given to the parents of the same children. Findings also indicates that children from high-class households also watch Hindi animated cartoon since parents do not think these shows are beneficial for their children's mother tongue. The findings further indicate that prolonged exposure contributes to measurable forms of language change. Lexical borrowing is observed in the routine use of Hindi words and phrases within everyday speech of children. Preference shift reflects an increasing inclination toward Hindi expressions and accents. Code-switching emerges in which children alternate between their mother tongue and Hindi language. These linguistic outcomes are significantly more pronounced among heavy viewers supporting cultivation theory. Media effects accumulate gradually through repeated and frequent exposure of Hindi animated movies.
