Abstract

Consulting dictionary is a common L2 support reading strategy to solve vocabulary problems. Yet, its effectiveness depends on how it is used, which is explored in this qualitative research. Fifteen undergraduates were involved in think aloud TA to observe their dictionary use for unknown words and phrases while[1] comprehending L2 text. Students’ perceptions regarding vocabulary solving strategies were also explored using semi structured interviews. The majority of students were found using bilingual online dictionaries for looking up of word definitions, which was limited to one familiar meaning; thus, limiting their understanding of text often led to incorrect translations. Besides dictionaries, students used AI tools and ChatGPT for solving lexical and comprehension problems. The study recommends explicit vocabulary and dictionary using instructions with scaffolded practice activities.
