Abstract

This study investigates the dynamics of urbanization on family structures in the G-10 sector of Islamabad, Pakistan. The primary objectives are to examine how urbanization influences gender roles, economic opportunities, and living arrangements within families, as well as to identify the challenges and opportunities that families encounter in rapidly urbanizing environments. Guided by Modernization Theory, which posits that economic and social development drive transformations in societal structures, the research seeks to understand the nuanced interplay between urban growth and family dynamics. Employing a quantitative research design, the study surveyed 375 households using cluster and random sampling techniques. Data was collected through an interviewing schedule and analyzed using SPSS, utilizing both descriptive and inferential statistics to test the hypothesis that urbanization is associated with smaller family sizes. The major findings reveal a significant trend towards smaller nuclear families, with a majority of respondents having one child or none. Higher educational attainment and the prevalence of dual-income households were also prominent, indicating enhanced socio-economic mobility and shifting gender roles. Economic considerations emerged as the primary factor influencing family size decisions, supporting the hypothesis that urbanization leads to smaller families. Additionally, challenges such as high living costs and limited access to affordable housing were identified as critical obstacles for urban families. In conclusion, the study underscores the multifaceted effects of urbanization on family structures in G-10 sector Islamabad, highlighting both the socio-economic benefits and the infrastructural challenges it presents. The findings suggest that while urbanization fosters educational and economic advancements, it also necessitates targeted policy interventions to address the economic pressures and support sustainable family well-being in urban settings.
