Barriers To Flourishing: How Social And Economic Challenges Impact Phd Scholars' Well-Being
Abstract
Doctoral education, while representing the pinnacle of academic achievement, is fraught with challenges that significantly impact the mental health and well-being of PhD scholars. This study explores the influence of social, psychosocial, and socio-economic factors on the well-being and flourishing of doctoral students in Pakistan, using qualitative data from 74 PhD scholars across various disciplines. The findings from reflexive thematic analysis revealed that insufficient social support, strained relationships with supervisors and peers, financial hardships, and limited access to mental health resources exacerbate stress, anxiety, and isolation among students. Moreover, family expectations, unclear research objectives, and institutional inadequacies further hinder academic progress and personal growth. By addressing these challenges within Pakistan’s unique socio-cultural and educational context, the study highlights the urgent need for tailored interventions and support systems to foster a more enabling environment, ensuring the holistic well-being and academic success of PhD scholars.
