Association Between Self-Care Abilities And Quality Of Life In Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Introduction: chronic Kidney disease is a worldwide concern, these patients face several physical, psychological, and social stressors that reduce their Quality of Life (QOL). The ability to care is one of the elements that have been shown to improve QOL.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between self-care abilities and quality of life in patients with chronic kidney disease.
Methodology: An analytical cross-sectional analytical study was carried out in civil hospital, Bolan medical complex hospital and Kidney hospital Quetta. Data were collected from a total of 278 patients with kidney disease consecutive sampling technique were used using two standard and validated questionnaires for Quality of life and Self-care practices. Patients with CKD admitted at tertiary care hospital whose age was more than 18 years were included in the study. The study was approved from ethical review board KMU and data collection permission was granted from head of concern hospitals. Consents were granted from all the included participants. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.
Results: Overall, 58% of the participants with CKD reported partially satisfactory self-care abilities followed by unsatisfactory self-care abilities (36%) and satisfactory self-care practices. The majority (59%) of the participants were reported average Quality of life followed by poor quality of life (41%). A significant (P=0.02) association was found between Quality of life and Self-care practices.
Conclusion: Patients with chronic kidney disease experience no desirable Quality of life. these patients reported unsatisfactory self-care practices. There is a positive association between the quality of life and self-care abilities in patients with CKD. Proper interventions are required to educate these patients regarding self-care abilities so that to improve their quality of life.
