Maritime Security Dynamics In The Indian Ocean: Assessing The Impact Of Sino-US Strategic Competition On Pakistan
Abstract
The strategic competition between the two global heavyweights, China and the United States, has altered importance of the Indian Ocean, a vital geopolitical arena. Indeed, when the global power structure drastically changes, this situation allows Pakistan to view the maritime dimension as an important area that directly influences these developments and impacts the activities of many adjacent states. Pakistan is closely monitoring the strategic competition between China and the USA in the IOR to understand maritime security dynamics. Pakistan's diplomatic efforts, the nation's changing national security strategy, along with dynamics of maritime security regarding the strategic competition between China and the USA in IOR are primary areas of focus. With application of Regional Security Complex Theory, the study provides a greater understanding of the geopolitical complexities and successfully guides future strategic engagements in the vicinity. An obvious example of a significant change in Pakistan's strategic environment is the expansion of her economic and security ties with China, especially through the CPEC. Significantly, the challenging balance that exists between ties with China and then USA complicates the notion of preserving national interest. The study encompasses the fundamental basics of understanding the situation and acting accordingly by Pakistan.
